Not many people have the opportunity to make a career out of something they love. I tried very hard to make a professional career out of watching baseball on TV. But curiously, no one was willing to pay me. So I settled on this design and illustration thing. Truthfully though, I was lucky to find my career when I was only a child. I was fascinated with company logos and I developed a habit of drawing the logos I found most interesting on a daily basis. Whether they were for skateboard companies, bands, or soft drinks. I wasn’t biased on what the company was. Good design was and is good design. I asked my mother one day, who created these logos? At around 12 years old, I knew what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.
Don’t take that the wrong way though. I don’t believe I’m a naturally gifted artist. Rumour has it when Jimi Hendrix was given a guitar the very first time, he could play it. Upside down. I’m no Jimi Hendrix. However, I do believe I was born with the eye to recognize good aesthetics and why something unique is just that. So combining that eye with hard work and dedication, I hope to one day have a portfolio I can look back on with pride. Let’s face it, Jimi probably couldn’t play when he was first handed the guitar. But he worked harder than most to master it. That’s all I can aim to do.
